Barbell Curls
If you're looking for an effective exercise to strengthen your biceps, barbell curls are an excellent choice. This exercise is not only great for building muscle, but also improves grip strength and arm stability.
Execution
-
1
Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a barbell with both hands. Your palms should be facing forward.
-
2
Brace your abdominal muscles and keep your elbows close to your body.
-
3
Exhale and curl the barbell upward toward your chest while moving only your forearms.
-
4
Hold the top position briefly and squeeze your biceps.
-
5
Inhale and slowly and controllably lower the barbell back to the starting position.
Benefits
- Strengthening the biceps for improved arm function.
- Improving grip strength, which is useful during other strength-training exercises.
- Increases muscle mass and may help burn calories.
Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight, causing you to swing your body. Try reducing the weight for proper execution.
- ! Allowing your elbows to change position during the exercise. Keep them firmly beside your body.
- ! Lowering the weights too quickly. The downward movement should be slow and controlled.
Primary Muscles
The primary muscle group trained with barbell curls is the biceps brachii. The brachialis and brachioradialis are also trained to a lesser extent.
Possible Alternatives
- Dumbbell hammer curls for a variation that also targets the forearm muscles more.
- Concentration curls for a more isolated biceps workout.
- Use an EZ-curl bar if the straight barbell is uncomfortable for your wrists.
