One-Arm Triceps Pushdown
The One-Arm Triceps Pushdown is an effective exercise for isolating and strengthening your triceps. Using one arm at a time allows you to focus on the muscle contraction and correct any imbalance between the arms.
Execution
-
1
Stand upright in front of a cable machine with the pulley set to a high position.
-
2
Grasp the handle with one hand using an underhand grip (palm facing upward).
-
3
Lean slightly forward from your hips and keep your elbow close to your body.
-
4
Inhale and push the handle downward until your arm is fully extended.
-
5
Hold this position briefly, then slowly and controllably return to the starting position.
-
6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch arms.
Benefits
- Improves symmetry and balance between the arms.
- Allows you to focus on the triceps without assistance from other muscles.
- Increases triceps strength and definition.
Common Mistakes
- ! Standing too far away from the cable machine, which can lead to less effective isolation of the triceps.
- ! Allowing the elbow to move too much, which takes the focus of the exercise away from the triceps.
- ! Performing the movement too quickly, placing more emphasis on momentum than on muscle contraction.
Key Muscles
The primary focus is on the triceps brachii, with secondary involvement of the forearms and slight stabilization from the shoulders and upper back.
Possible Alternatives
- Use a rope instead of a straight handle for a different grip and stimulus.
- Perform the exercise with a resistance band for variable resistance throughout the movement.
- Try performing the exercise seated for greater stability and focus on the triceps.
