Execution

  1. 1
Find a comfortable place on a bench or on the floor and grip a barbell with both hands. Hold the barbell above your head with your arms fully extended.
  2. 2
Inhale and slowly bend your elbows to lower the barbell behind your head. Keep your elbows as still as possible and do not let them flare out.
  3. 3
Exhale as you extend your arms to bring the barbell back to the starting position.
  4. 4
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Effectively strengthens the triceps.
  • Improves overall arm strength and appearance.
  • May help improve performance in other exercises that use the triceps.
  • Minimal stress on the elbows when performed correctly.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Allowing the elbows to flare out too far, which can lead to unnecessary stress on the elbows.
  • ! Lowering or raising the weight too quickly, resulting in a loss of control.
  • ! Using a weight that is too heavy, causing form to deteriorate.

Target Muscles

The primary focus of the French press is the triceps brachii. The forearms are also trained lightly by holding and controlling the weight.

Possible Alternatives

  • Use dumbbells instead of a barbell for a slight variation in the movement and to train each arm separately.
  • Perform the exercise seated for greater stability and focus on the triceps.
  • Change the grip width to emphasize different parts of the triceps.
