Barbell Lying Close-Grip Press

The Barbell Lying Close-Grip Press is a powerful exercise that targets the triceps, chest, and shoulders. This exercise is unique because it allows you to work with a relatively heavy load, leading to significant strength and muscle development, especially in the triceps.

Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back on a flat bench and grip a barbell with a close grip, approximately shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Hold the barbell above your chest with your arms extended.
  3. 3
Inhale and slowly lower the barbell toward your chest by bending your elbows. Keep your elbows close to your body.
  4. 4
When the barbell almost touches your chest, explosively press it back to the starting position while exhaling.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthens and enlarges the triceps.
  • Improved strength for pushing movements.
  • Helps develop balanced upper-body symmetry.
  • May contribute to better performance in other exercises such as the bench press and push-ups.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lowering the barbell too quickly: This can lead to loss of control and injuries. Use a controlled movement.
  • ! Allowing the elbows to flare too far outward: This reduces the effectiveness for the triceps and increases the risk of shoulder injuries.
  • ! Using too heavy a load: This can compromise technique and lead to injuries.

Main Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the triceps brachii, while the chest muscles (pectoralis major) and anterior shoulder muscles (anterior deltoids) are also effectively trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • Dumbbell Lying Triceps Extension: For similar triceps training with a slightly different angle.
  • Close-Grip Bench Press: An alternative that places more emphasis on the chest muscles.
  • Triceps Pushdown: For more isolated triceps training.
