Barbell Close-Grip Bench Press

The Barbell Close-Grip Bench Press is a powerful exercise aimed at strengthening your upper body, with a particular focus on the triceps and chest muscles. This variation of the traditional bench press places greater emphasis on the triceps through its narrow grip, making it an excellent choice for anyone who wants to increase their arm strength.

Execution

  1. 1
Lie on a flat bench with your feet firmly on the floor. Ensure that your back is slightly arched and your shoulder blades are pulled together and down.
  2. 2
Grip the barbell with a grip narrower than shoulder-width. Your hands should be approximately in line with your shoulders.
  3. 3
Take a deep breath and lift the barbell out of the rack. Bring the barbell over your chest with your arms extended.
  4. 4
Exhale as you slowly lower the barbell toward the middle of your chest. Keep your elbows close to your body throughout the entire movement.
  5. 5
Press the barbell back up to the starting position by contracting your triceps. Inhale at the beginning of this movement.

Benefits

  • Effectively strengthens the triceps, contributing to better performance in other exercises and daily activities.
  • Helps build a larger and stronger chest.
  • The narrow grip reduces the load on the shoulders, making it ideal for people with shoulder problems.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lowering or pressing the barbell up too quickly, which can lead to loss of control and injuries.
  • ! Using too wide a grip, causing greater emphasis on the chest muscles than on the triceps.
  • ! Holding the elbows too far from the body, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise and increases the risk of injury.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscle groups engaged during the Barbell Close-Grip Bench Press are the triceps brachii, pectoralis major (chest muscles), and, to a lesser extent, the deltoids (shoulder muscles).

Possible Alternatives

  • If you do not have access to a barbell, you can replace the exercise with Dumbbell Close-Grip Presses. This variation offers greater freedom of movement and can help improve muscle balance.
  • For beginners or people with injuries, the Close-Grip Push-Up can be a good alternative. This exercise requires no equipment and can be performed anywhere.
  • To increase the intensity, you can consider using a resistance band or placing your feet on an elevated platform during Close-Grip Push-Ups.
