Execution

  1. 1
Begin by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of your shoulders. Your palms should face toward you.
  2. 2
Inhale and press the dumbbells overhead while rotating your palms outward, so they face away from you at the end of the movement.
  3. 3
Make sure your elbows are straight but not locked at the end of the press.
  4. 4
Slowly and controllably lower the dumbbells back to the starting position while exhaling.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves shoulder mobility and stability.
  • Strengthens multiple muscle groups simultaneously, resulting in an efficient workout.
  • The rotational movement produces greater activation of the shoulder muscles than traditional pressing movements.
  • Helps improve overall upper-body strength and posture.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the movement too quickly: Use a controlled movement to achieve maximum muscle activation and prevent injuries.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy: Start with lighter weights to ensure proper form.
  • ! Allowing the elbows to move too far outward: Keep your elbows under the weights for optimal execution.

Primary Muscles

The Standing Arnold Press primarily targets the shoulder muscles (deltoids), but also engages the triceps, upper back, and the muscles around the shoulder blades for stability and strength.

Possible Alternatives

  • Seated Arnold Press: For those who want to reduce lower-body stability and focus more on the shoulders.
  • Arnold Press with dumbbells: For a variation in grip and weight distribution.
  • Arnold Press with resistance bands: For a different form of resistance and to make the exercise more accessible for beginners.
