  • Push Press

The push press is a dynamic compound exercise that develops strength and explosiveness in your upper body, with a focus on the shoulders. The unique benefit of the push press is that it not only strengthens your muscles but also improves your ability to generate force quickly, which is useful in many sports.

Execution:

  1. Begin with a barbell at shoulder height, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  2. Place your feet hip-width apart and keep your back straight and core engaged.
  3. Dip slightly by bending your knees and explode upward, using the power of your legs to press the barbell overhead.
  4. Fully extend your arms and lock out your elbows at the end of the movement.
  5. Lower the barbell under control back to the starting position on your shoulders.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Main Muscles:

  • Deltoids (shoulders)
  • Triceps
  • Quadriceps (front of the thighs)
  • Core (abdominal muscles and lower back)

Benefits:

  • Improves overall strength and explosiveness.
  • Helps build muscle mass in the upper body.
  • Increases core stability and strength.
  • Functional for improving performance in other exercises and sports.

Common Mistakes:

  • Focusing too much on the arms and not using the legs enough to drive the barbell upward.
  • Arching the back during the exercise, which can lead to injuries.
  • Not fully extending the elbows or not keeping the barbell directly overhead.

Possible Alternatives:

  • Use dumbbells instead of a barbell for a greater stabilization challenge.
  • Perform the exercise seated to place more focus on the shoulders and reduce leg involvement.
  • Adjust the grip width to emphasize different parts of the shoulders.
