Incline Dumbbell Lateral Raise
The incline dumbbell lateral raise is an effective exercise for strengthening and defining your shoulder muscles. This variation of the traditional lateral raise adds an incline position, challenging your shoulders in a unique way.
Execution
-
1
Find an incline bench and set it to an angle of approximately 45 degrees.
-
2
Hold a dumbbell in each hand and lie chest-down on the bench, with your feet firmly on the floor.
-
3
Let your arms hang straight down, with your palms facing each other.
-
4
Inhale and raise the dumbbells out to the sides until your arms are parallel to the floor, with a slight bend in your elbows.
-
5
Exhale as you slowly and controlledly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
Benefits
The incline position places more emphasis on the rear deltoids, supporting balanced shoulder development. This can help improve your posture and reduce injury risk through a stronger and more balanced shoulder girdle.
Common Mistakes
- ! Performing the movement too quickly, which can lead to less muscle activation and a higher risk of injury.
- ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing your technique to deteriorate.
- ! Lifting the dumbbells too high, placing unnecessary strain on your neck and upper back.
Key Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the lateral deltoids on the sides of your shoulders. The trapezius and serratus anterior muscles are also engaged lightly.
Possible Alternatives
- For a lighter variation, perform the exercise seated without an incline bench.
- To increase the intensity, try performing the exercise standing with a slight forward lean; this places more emphasis on the rear deltoids.
- Use resistance bands instead of dumbbells for a different form of resistance.
