Execution

  1. 1
Begin by choosing a suitable dumbbell. The weight should be challenging but still allow you to perform the exercise with proper form.
  2. 2
Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart. Grip the dumbbell with one hand and bring it overhead with your arm fully extended.
  3. 3
Keep your wrist straight and your arm close to your ear throughout the exercise.
  4. 4
Brace your core and walk slowly forward while keeping the dumbbell overhead. Keep your gaze straight ahead and your back straight.
  5. 5
Walk for a set distance or time, then switch arms and repeat the exercise.

Benefits

  • Improves shoulder stability and mobility.
  • Strengthens the core, contributing to better posture and reduced back pain.
  • Increases grip strength by holding the dumbbell.
  • Helps develop balance and coordination through the unilateral load.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using a weight that is too heavy, causing your form to break down. Start light and build up.
  • ! Failing to fully extend the arm or holding the dumbbell too far from the body, which places additional stress on the shoulder.
  • ! Failing to brace the core, which can lead to poor posture and back pain.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the shoulder muscles (deltoids), trapezius, upper back, and core. The arm muscles (biceps and triceps) and forearms are also trained secondarily.

Possible Alternatives

  • If holding a weight overhead is too challenging, try the Dumbbell Farmer's Walk, keeping the weights at your sides.
  • For an extra challenge, add lateral movements or walk over an uneven surface.
  • Use a kettlebell instead of a dumbbell for a slightly different grip and weight distribution.
