Execution

  1. 1
Find a bench and sit upright with a dumbbell in each hand. Hold the dumbbells at shoulder height with a parallel grip (palms facing each other).
  2. 2
Inhale and press the dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended.
  3. 3
Pause briefly at the top, then slowly and controllably lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
  4. 4
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves shoulder stability and strength.
  • The parallel grip provides a less stressful position for the shoulder joints, making it ideal for people with shoulder problems.
  • Strengthens multiple muscle groups at once, making it efficient for your workout.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the movement too quickly, which can lead to less muscle activation and a higher risk of injury.
  • ! Using weights that are too heavy, causing your form to break down.
  • ! Not fully extending the arms at the top of the movement.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the deltoids (shoulder muscles), but also engages the triceps (back of the upper arms) and, to a lesser extent, the upper chest muscles.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the dumbbell seated shoulder press with a parallel grip is too challenging, try the exercise with lighter weights or without weights to practice proper form.
  • For an added challenge, you can perform the exercise standing to require more core stability.
  • Another variation is switching to a traditional grip (palms facing forward) to train the muscles in a slightly different way.
