Benefits

In addition to strengthening the shoulder muscles, this exercise improves posture, promotes core stability, and increases overall functional strength. Using an exercise ball adds a balance element that further challenges the core muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight: This can lead to poor form and possible injury. Start light and gradually increase the weight.
  • ! Arching the back: Keep your back straight and your core engaged to protect your spine.
  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled manner to ensure maximum muscle activation.

Instructions

  1. Find an exercise ball and select two dumbbells with a suitable weight for your fitness level.
  2. Sit on the exercise ball with your feet flat on the floor, approximately shoulder-width apart. Keep your back straight and your core muscles engaged.
  3. Hold a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, with your elbows bent and your palms facing forward.
  4. Exhale and press the dumbbells overhead until your arms are fully extended.
  5. Inhale and slowly and controllably lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the deltoids (shoulder muscles), but also engages the triceps, upper back, and various core muscles, including the abdominals and lower back, to provide stability during execution.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity, you can vary the weight of the dumbbells or the stability of the exercise ball. For beginners, performing the exercise on a stable surface, such as a bench, can help them master the technique. Advanced users can make the exercise more challenging by using a heavier ball or dumbbells, or by lifting one arm at a time.
