Dumbbell Front + Lateral Raise
The Dumbbell Front + Lateral Raise is an effective exercise that targets strengthening and toning your shoulders. By combining two movements, you maximize the efficiency of your workout and work both the front and side deltoids.
Execution
-
1
Begin standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand. Keep your arms at your sides with your palms facing you.
-
2
Inhale and raise the dumbbells in front of you to shoulder height, with a slight bend in your elbows. Keep your back straight.
-
3
Slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position.
-
4
Now raise the dumbbells out to the sides to shoulder height, again with a slight bend in your elbows.
-
5
Slowly lower the dumbbells back to the starting position. This completes one repetition.
Benefits
- Improves shoulder mobility and stability.
- Strengthens multiple muscle groups at once, saving time.
- Helps create balanced muscle development around the shoulder.
Common Mistakes
- ! Lifting and lowering the weights too quickly: Focus on a controlled movement to train the muscles effectively.
- ! Using weights that are too heavy: This can lead to poor form and possible injuries. Start light and gradually work up.
- ! Arching your back during the exercise: Keep your back straight to prevent pressure on your lower back.
Key Muscles
This exercise primarily works the anterior and lateral deltoids of the shoulders, but also engages the trapezius and upper-arm muscles for stability.
Possible Alternatives
- If the combination is too challenging, start with only front raises or lateral raises to build strength.
- Use resistance bands instead of dumbbells for a different form of resistance.
- Increase the intensity by performing the exercise in a seated position, which increases core stabilization.
