Begin standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height with your palms facing forward.
  2. 2

Repeat the movement with the other arm. This completes one repetition.
  5. 5
Perform 3 sets of 8–12 repetitions, depending on your fitness level.

Benefits

  • Improves muscle strength and mass in the shoulders.
  • Increases upper-body stability and balance.
  • Stimulates coordination between different muscle groups.
  • May help improve posture by strengthening the upper back and shoulders.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using weights that are too heavy: This can lead to poor form and possible injuries. Start light and increase gradually.
  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly: A controlled movement ensures maximum muscle activation and minimizes the risk of injury.
  • ! Arching the back: Keep your back straight and your core engaged to protect your spine.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the deltoids (shoulder muscles), but also engages the triceps (back of the upper arms), upper chest muscles, and the muscles around the upper back and neck.

Possible Alternatives

  • Arnold Press: A variation in which you rotate the dumbbells in front of your face while pressing, for additional rotation and shoulder activation.
  • Seated Dumbbell Shoulder Press: Performing the exercise while seated can help stabilize the back and is a good option if you are new to the exercise.
  • Using resistance bands: Resistance bands can be used instead of dumbbells to train the shoulders with a different form of resistance.
