Barbell Upright Row
The Barbell Upright Row is an effective exercise for strengthening the shoulders and upper back. This exercise offers unique benefits for improving posture and increasing shoulder stability.
Execution
-
1
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and grip the barbell with an overhand grip slightly narrower than shoulder width.
-
2
Keep your back straight and your knees slightly bent.
-
3
Lift the barbell toward your chin by moving your elbows up and out. Make sure your elbows are always higher than your forearms.
-
4
Lower the barbell slowly and in a controlled manner back to the starting position.
Benefits
- Improves the strength and stability of the shoulder girdle.
- Helps develop better posture.
- May contribute to a more aesthetically balanced upper body.
Common Mistakes
- ! Lifting too much weight, causing technique to deteriorate.
- ! Lifting the barbell too high, placing unnecessary stress on the shoulders.
- ! Failing to keep the elbows higher than the forearms during the exercise.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the deltoids (shoulders), the trapezius (upper back), and, to a lesser extent, the biceps.
Possible Alternatives
- Use dumbbells instead of a barbell for greater freedom of movement.
- Try performing the exercise seated to reduce strain on the lower back.
- Change the grip width to emphasize different parts of the shoulders and upper back.
