Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing the barbell on the floor in front of your feet. Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Bend your knees slightly and grip the barbell with an overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. 3
Stand upright with the barbell, keeping your arms straight. This is your starting position.
  4. 4
Shrug your shoulders as high as possible toward your ears and hold this position briefly.
  5. 5
Then lower your shoulders under control back to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthening the trapezius and upper-back muscles, contributing to better posture.
  • Improving grip strength by holding the barbell.
  • Flexibility in the shoulders and neck can be improved.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Using too much weight, causing the movement to be performed incompletely or incorrectly.
  • ! Rolling the shoulders during the exercise, which can lead to injuries.
  • ! Not fully lowering the shoulders after each repetition, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscle group trained with Barbell Shrugs is the trapezius. This large muscle runs from your neck, across your shoulders, to the middle of your back. The muscles around your shoulder blades and upper arms are also engaged to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise or simply add some variation to your workout, consider the following alternatives:

  • Dumbbell Shrugs: Similar to Barbell Shrugs, but performed with dumbbells. This allows for a greater range of movement.
  • Kettlebell Shrugs: A good variation that requires a different grip and therefore challenges the forearms more.
  • Smith Machine Shrugs: For those who value stability and a controlled movement.
