Benefits

  • Improves shoulder mobility and flexibility.
  • Strengthens the muscles around the shoulder joints, which may help prevent injuries.
  • Provides balanced development of the shoulder musculature.
  • Improves posture by strengthening the upper back and shoulders.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the exercise too quickly, which can lead to improper form and possible injuries.
  • ! Using too much weight, causing technique to deteriorate.
  • ! Failing to keep the back straight, which can place pressure on the spine.
  • ! Lowering the barbell too far behind the neck, which can place unnecessary stress on the shoulders.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily trains the deltoids (shoulders), with a particular focus on the rear deltoids. The trapezius (upper back) and, to a lesser extent, the triceps are also engaged.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the Barbell Seated Behind-Neck Military Press is too challenging, try the Standing Military Press for a slightly different focus and stability challenge.
  • For those with limited mobility or shoulder problems, the Dumbbell Shoulder Press may offer a safer alternative with more control over the movement.
  • To vary the intensity, you can also use a Smith machine for greater stability during the exercise.
