Execution

  1. 1
Begin with your feet hip-width apart, holding a weight in each hand at your sides.
  2. 2
Take a large step forward with one leg while keeping your back straight.
  3. 3
Bend both knees to lower yourself until your front thigh is almost parallel to the floor. Make sure your front knee does not go past your toes.
  4. 4
Push yourself up through the heel of your front foot to return to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with the other leg.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination by performing a unilateral movement.
  • Increases muscle mass and strength in the lower body.
  • Helps burn calories by engaging large muscle groups.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward, which can place pressure on the knees.
  • ! Allowing the knee of the front leg to move too far past the toes.
  • ! Not lowering yourself far enough, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps (front of the thighs), hamstrings (back of the thighs), glutes (gluteus maximus, medius, and minimus), and to a lesser extent the calves and core.

Possible Alternatives

  • For beginners: Lunges without weights to perfect your form and technique.
  • To increase the intensity: Use heavier weights or add a plyometric jump to each lunge.
  • For variety: Try side lunges or reverse lunges to target different muscle groups.
