Wall Squat

The Wall Squat is a fantastic exercise for strengthening your lower body, with a focus on the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. The great thing about this exercise is that you only need a wall, making it an accessible option for home or the gym.

Execution

  1. 1
Begin by standing with your back against a wall. Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart and approximately 60 cm from the wall.
  2. 2
Slowly bend your knees while keeping your back straight and pressed against the wall. Continue until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Your knees should be above your ankles, at a 90-degree angle.
  3. 3
Hold this position while bracing your core and making sure your back remains flat against the wall.
  4. 4
Stay in this position for as long as possible, aiming for at least 30 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves the strength and endurance of the lower-body muscles.
  • Helps build stability and balance.
  • Can contribute to better posture and back health by strengthening the core and lower back.
  • Is accessible and can be performed almost anywhere.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Not lowering far enough: Try to get your thighs parallel to the floor for maximum effectiveness.
  • ! Knees extending too far past the toes: Make sure your knees do not move past your toes to avoid pressure on the knees.
  • ! Back not flat against the wall: This can lead to unnecessary strain on your back. Make sure your back is in full contact with the wall.

Primary Muscles

The Wall Squat primarily targets the quadriceps (front of the thighs), but the hamstrings (back of the thighs), glutes, and, to a lesser extent, the calves and core are also trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • Wall Squat with an exercise ball: Place an exercise ball between your back and the wall for additional stability and a different sensation.
  • Single-leg Wall Squat: For an additional challenge, try performing the exercise on one leg.
  • Wall Squat with weights: Hold a weight in front of your chest to increase the intensity.
