Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing the barbell on your upper back, not on your neck. Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Step one leg out to the side while keeping your toes pointed forward. Make sure your other foot remains firmly on the floor.
  3. 3
Bend your lateral leg and lower your hips until your thigh is parallel to the floor, while keeping your other leg straight.
  4. 4
Push yourself back to the starting position by using the strength of your lateral leg.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement on the other side.

Benefits

  • Improves lower-body strength and stability.
  • Increases flexibility in the hips.
  • Helps improve balance and coordination.
  • May contribute to better posture by strengthening the core.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning the upper body too far forward, which puts strain on the back. Keep your back straight.
  • ! Allowing the knee of the bent leg to move too far past the toes. Make sure your knee stays aligned with your foot.
  • ! Not lowering yourself deeply enough, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps and gluteus maximus. The hamstrings, adductors, and core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • For beginners: Perform the exercise without a barbell or with a lighter weight.
  • To increase the intensity: Add more weight to the barbell or hold a weight plate in front of your chest.
  • As a variation: Try the side lunge with a resistance band around your legs for additional resistance.
