Smith Machine Squat
The Smith Machine Squat is a popular exercise focused on strengthening the lower body. The guided movement provides additional stability and safety, allowing you to focus on proper execution without worrying about balance.
Execution
-
1
Set the Smith Machine to the correct height so that the bar is at shoulder height when you are standing.
-
2
Step under the bar and place it on your shoulders, just above your shoulder blades. Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart with your toes pointed slightly outward.
-
3
Unlock the bar and keep your back straight and chest lifted. Slowly bend your knees as if you are sitting down. Make sure your knees remain aligned with your toes.
-
4
Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor, or as low as is comfortable for you.
-
5
Press yourself back up to the starting position by driving your heels into the floor.
Benefits
- Increased stability and safety due to the guided movement of the Smith Machine.
- Ability to lift heavier without a spotter.
- Focus on the lower-body muscles without the need for advanced balance and technique.
Common Mistakes
- ! Leaning too far forward or backward, which can place pressure on the knees and back.
- ! Allowing the knees to cave too far inward or move too far outward.
- ! Not lowering far enough, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
Target Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, but the hamstrings, glutes, and, to a lesser extent, the lower back and core are also trained.
Possible Alternatives
- Vary your foot position—wider or narrower—to emphasize different parts of the quadriceps and glutes.
- Place an elevation under your heels for a deeper squat and greater emphasis on the quadriceps.
- Use a free-weight barbell instead of the Smith Machine for a more advanced variation that also requires balance and stability.
