Side Deep Squat
The Side Deep Squat is a dynamic exercise that focuses on strengthening and toning your lower body, with particular emphasis on the inner and outer thighs, as well as your glutes. This exercise adds an interesting twist to the traditional squat by incorporating a lateral movement, creating a unique challenge and activating different muscle groups.
Execution
-
1
Begin in a standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart.
-
2
Step your right foot out to the side and bend both knees to come into a deep squat position. Keep your back straight and your chest lifted.
-
3
Push yourself back to the starting position and repeat the movement on the other side.
-
4
Perform 3 sets of 10–15 repetitions on each side, or as fits within your workout routine.
Benefits
In addition to strengthening the muscle groups mentioned above, the Side Deep Squat also helps improve your overall balance and coordination. Adding a lateral movement increases activation of the muscles around your hips and thighs, which may contribute to better mobility and flexibility.
Common Mistakes
- ! Leaning too far forward: Keep your back straight and your chest lifted during the exercise to avoid pressure on your lower back.
- ! Knees extending past your toes: Make sure your knees do not extend past your toes as you lower into the squat position. This can place unnecessary strain on your knees.
- ! Insufficient depth: Try to lower as deeply as possible into the squat to experience the full benefits of the exercise, without compromising comfort and form.
Key Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and the adductors and abductors (the inner and outer thighs). It is an excellent way to develop balance and stability in your lower body.
Possible Alternatives
To adjust the intensity of the Side Deep Squat, consider adding weights, such as dumbbells or a kettlebell, held in front of your chest during the exercise. For beginners, reducing the depth of the squat or performing the exercise without additional weight may help gradually build strength.
