Offset Squat
The offset squat is a variation of the traditional squat that presents a unique challenge to your balance and stability. Holding the weight on one side of your body forces your muscles to work harder to keep your body balanced.
Execution
-
1
Begin by holding a dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand, at your shoulder or by your side.
-
2
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
-
3
Inhale and bend your knees to lower into a squat position, keeping your back straight and chest up.
-
4
Make sure your knees do not move past your toes.
-
5
Push yourself back up to the starting position as you exhale.
-
6
Repeat the exercise for the desired number of repetitions, then switch sides.
Benefits
The offset squat helps improve overall strength and symmetry in your lower body. It also strengthens your core and improves your balance and coordination through the uneven weight distribution.
Common Mistakes
- ! Using too much weight, causing your form to break down.
- ! Not squatting deep enough, preventing the muscles from being fully activated.
- ! Allowing the knees to collapse inward.
- ! Rounding your back during the exercise.
Primary Muscles
- Quadriceps (front of the thighs)
- Hamstrings (back of the thighs)
- Glutes (gluteal muscles)
- Core (abdominal and back muscles for stability)
Possible Alternatives
- Use a lighter weight or no weight to start and focus on proper form.
- Try the exercise with a barbell on one shoulder for a different variation.
- Add a lateral leg lift at the end of each squat for extra glute activation.
