Execution

  1. 1
Find a leg press machine and adjust the seat so that your knees can bend to a 90-degree angle when your feet are on the platform.
  2. 2
Place your feet shoulder-width apart or slightly closer together on the platform.
  3. 3
Unlock the safety bars and bend your knees to allow the weight to come toward you. Keep your back and head pressed against the backrest.
  4. 4
Push the platform away from you by extending your legs. Make sure not to fully lock out your knees.
  5. 5
Allow the weight to return to the starting position in a controlled manner.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Effectively strengthens the muscles of the lower body.
  • The close stance places more emphasis on the quadriceps.
  • Safer for the lower back compared with traditional squats.
  • Improves performance in other exercises and daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Fully locking out the knees at the end of the movement, which can lead to injuries.
  • ! Lowering the weight too quickly, which reduces control and increases the risk of injury.
  • ! Not using the full range of motion, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps (front of the thighs), but also trains the glutes, hamstrings (back of the thighs), and, to a lesser extent, the calves.

Possible Alternatives

  • Wide Stance Leg Press: Placing your feet farther apart places more emphasis on the inner thighs and glutes.
  • Single Leg Press: Perform the exercise with one leg for increased intensity and focus on individual leg strength.
  • Leg Press with Variable Foot Positions: Change the position of your feet (high, low, wide, narrow) to train different parts of your legs and glutes.
