Chair Pose - Woman Example

Execution

  1. 1
Begin in a standing position with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. 2
Inhale and extend your arms overhead, with your palms facing each other or lightly touching.
  3. 3
Exhale and bend your knees, as if sitting on an invisible chair. Try to bring your thighs as parallel to the floor as possible.
  4. 4
Keep your back straight and tilt your pelvis slightly backward to maintain the natural curve of your lower back.
  5. 5
Stay in this position for three to five breaths, or longer if you can, then slowly rise back up.

Benefits

This pose not only helps build strength in the lower-body muscles, but also improves the stability of the knees and ankles, increases core stability, and may help reduce symptoms of flat feet. In addition, it is a great way to improve your concentration and perseverance.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward with the upper body; try to keep your back straight.
  • ! Allowing the knees to extend too far over the toes; make sure your knees do not go farther than your toes.
  • ! Lifting the heels off the floor; keep your heels firmly pressed into the ground.

Target Muscles

Chair Pose primarily targets the quadriceps, but also activates the muscles of the lower back, calves, ankles, and, to a lesser extent, the abdominals and shoulders.

Possible Alternatives

To adjust the intensity of Chair Pose, you can try balancing on the balls of your feet for an additional challenge, or reduce the depth of the squat if you are just starting out or have knee problems. Another variation is to bring your hands together in front of your chest instead of holding them overhead, which helps with balance.
