Box Jumps
Introduction: Box jumps are an explosive exercise in which you jump from a standing position onto an elevated platform. This exercise improves your jumping power, coordination, and burns many calories.
Execution:
- Place a sturdy box or platform in front of you. Choose the height based on your own experience and capacity.
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart in front of the box.
- Bend your knees into a quarter squat and swing your arms to create momentum.
- Jump explosively upward and land with both feet simultaneously on the box.
- Stand fully upright and extend your hips and knees.
- Carefully step or jump back to the starting position and repeat.
Main Muscles: Box jumps primarily train your quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and glutes. Your core is also engaged for stability.
Benefits: This exercise helps improve your vertical jump, raises your heart rate for a cardiovascular workout, and strengthens the muscles in your lower body.
Common Mistakes:
- Standing too far away from the box, causing you to jump too great a distance.
- Landing on the box with straight legs, which is bad for your joints.
- Not fully extending on the box, preventing you from getting the most out of the exercise.
Possible Alternatives: If you want to adjust the intensity, you can change the height of the box. A lower box may be useful for beginners, while advanced users can use a higher box. Step-ups are a good alternative if you are not ready for the impact of box jumps.
