Execution

  1. 1
Begin with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart, with your toes pointing slightly outward.
  2. 2
Inhale and bend your knees while pushing your hips back as if you were sitting in a chair. Make sure your knees stay aligned with your feet.
  3. 3
Lower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor, or as low as is comfortable for you.
  4. 4
Powerfully push yourself back to the starting position by driving your heels into the floor while exhaling.
  5. 5
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves lower-body strength and stability.
  • Helps build muscle mass in the thighs and glutes.
  • Increases flexibility in the hips and ankles.
  • May contribute to better posture and balance.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Knees caving inward: Make sure your knees stay aligned with your feet throughout the movement.
  • ! Leaning too far forward: Keep your chest lifted and your back straight to prevent leaning too far forward.
  • ! Not squatting deeply enough: Try to get your thighs parallel to the floor for maximum exercise effectiveness.

Primary Muscles

The sumo squat primarily targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and adductors (inner thighs). The calves and lower back are also trained to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • To increase the intensity, you can hold weights while performing the exercise.
  • For lower intensity or if you are new to squats, try the movement without lowering into a full squat.
  • Sumo squat jumps add a cardio element for additional fat burning.
