Execution

  1. 1
Begin in a standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Keep your arms bent and in front of your chest, as if you were holding a large ball.
  3. 3
Slowly bend your knees as if you were sitting down, keeping your back straight and chest lifted.
  4. 4
Make sure your knees do not move past your toes as you lower.
  5. 5
Push yourself back up to the starting position by driving your heels into the floor.

Benefits

The Bent-Arm Squat helps build lower-body strength, improves balance and stability, and increases flexibility in the hips and ankles. Engaging the arms and core creates a full-body workout.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning the upper body too far forward, which can place pressure on the lower back.
  • ! Allowing the knees to cave too far inward or drift too far outward, which can lead to injuries.
  • ! Not lowering deeply enough, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and core. The shoulders and arms are also lightly trained by the arm position.

Possible Alternatives

To adjust the intensity, you can vary the position of your arms or add extra weight. Beginners can hold a light dumbbell in front of the chest, while advanced exercisers can choose a heavier weight or add overhead presses to each squat.
