Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing a barbell on your upper back, not on your neck. Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Step one leg backward, far enough so that when you kneel down, your front thigh is parallel to the floor.
  3. 3
Make sure your front knee does not move past your toes and that your back knee almost touches the floor.
  4. 4
Push yourself up through the heel of your front foot and return to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with the other leg.

Benefits

Barbell Rear Lunges help build muscle mass and strength in your legs and glutes. They also improve your balance and coordination, which is beneficial for other physical activities and daily life.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning the upper body too far forward, which can place pressure on the lower back.
  • ! Allowing the knee of the front leg to move too far past the toes, which can lead to knee injuries.
  • ! Not lowering deeply enough, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps and gluteus maximus. The hamstrings and core muscles are also trained for stability.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the exercise, you can consider using dumbbells instead of a barbell, or even bodyweight lunges if you are new to this movement. For an extra challenge, you can try performing Bulgarian Split Squats.
