Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing a box behind you. The height of the box should be such that when you place one foot on it, your knee can form a 90-degree angle.
  2. 2
Stand upright with a barbell on your shoulders, just above your shoulder blades. Make sure your grip is wide enough and your elbows point forward.
  3. 3
Step one leg backward and place the ball of your foot on the box.
  4. 4
Slowly lower through your front leg until your thigh is parallel to the ground. Make sure your knee does not go past your toes.
  5. 5
Drive yourself powerfully upward back to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions and then switch legs.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination through the unilateral nature of the exercise.
  • Increases the depth of the lunge, leading to greater activation of the glutes.
  • Helps develop symmetry between both legs.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward with the upper body, which can place additional pressure on the lower back.
  • ! Allowing the knee of the front leg to travel too far past the toes, which can lead to knee problems.
  • ! Not fully returning to the starting position, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps and gluteus maximus. The hamstrings and core muscles are also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • For a lighter variation, you can replace the barbell with dumbbells held at your sides.
  • To increase the intensity, you can use a higher box or add extra weight.
  • If you do not have a box, you can also use a sturdy elevated platform or a step.
