Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing the barbell on your upper back, not on your neck. Make sure your feet are shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Step forward with one leg, about a large step. Make sure your foot is fully on the ground.
  3. 3
Slowly bend your front knee while your back knee moves toward the ground. Keep your upper body upright and your hips facing forward.
  4. 4
Push yourself back to the starting position by using the strength of your front leg.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement with the other leg.

Benefits

  • Improved balance and coordination.
  • Increased leg strength and muscle mass.
  • Better core stability.
  • Increased flexibility in the hips.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward with the upper body, which can place pressure on the lower back.
  • ! Allowing the knee of the front leg to move too far past the toes, which can lead to knee problems.
  • ! Not lowering yourself far enough, reducing the effectiveness of the exercise.

Primary Muscles

Barbell lunges primarily target the quadriceps (front of the thighs), but also train the glutes, hamstrings (back of the thighs), calves, and core for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • If barbell lunges are too challenging, first try lunges without weight to master the technique.
  • For an extra challenge, try walking lunges with a barbell or dumbbells.
  • Use a Smith machine for more stability during the exercise.
