Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing the barbell on the front of your shoulders. Make sure your elbows are high and the barbell rests on your fingertips or in your palms, depending on your flexibility.
  2. 2
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointing slightly outward.
  3. 3
Inhale and begin by moving your hips back and bending your knees, as if you were sitting on a chair.
  4. 4
Lower until your thighs are parallel to the floor, while keeping your back straight and your core engaged.
  5. 5
Drive yourself explosively back up to the starting position while exhaling.

Benefits

This exercise improves not only lower-body strength, but also your posture and balance. Strengthening your core and upper back during Front Squats helps improve your overall stability, which is beneficial for other exercises and daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward: This can put pressure on your lower back. Make sure your back remains straight and your core engaged.
  • ! Letting your elbows drop: This can cause the barbell to roll off your shoulders. Keep your elbows high throughout the entire exercise.
  • ! Not lowering deeply enough: Try to get your thighs parallel to the floor for maximum effectiveness of the exercise.

Primary Muscles

The Barbell Front Squat primarily targets the quadriceps, but also trains the gluteus maximus, hamstrings, adductors, erector spinae, and the muscles in your core and upper back.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of Barbell Front Squats, you can consider doing Goblet Squats with a dumbbell or kettlebell for beginners, or Overhead Squats for a more advanced variation. Both options train similar muscle groups but with a different focus and difficulty level.
