Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing the barbell on a squat rack at shoulder height. Stand under the bar so that it rests on your front shoulders and above your chest, with your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Unrack the barbell and take a step back. Position your feet shoulder-width apart with your toes pointed slightly outward.
  3. 3
Inhale and lower yourself by moving your hips back and down, as if sitting in a chair. Keep your chest up and your back straight.
  4. 4
Lower until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Make sure your knees remain aligned with your toes.
  5. 5
Drive yourself explosively back up to the starting position by pressing your heels into the floor.
  6. 6
Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

The Barbell Clean Grip Front Squat helps build strength and mass in your lower body, improves your posture and stability, and increases overall functional strength. It is also an excellent exercise for improving mobility in your wrists and shoulders.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rounded back: Make sure your back remains straight throughout the movement to prevent injuries.
  • ! Knees caving inward: Make sure your knees do not cave inward. Gently push them outward in line with your toes.
  • ! Squatting too deep: If your mobility does not allow it, do not force an excessively deep squat. Work on your flexibility and mobility to squat deeper.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, but also trains the hamstrings, glutes, lower back, core, and upper-back muscles.

Possible Alternatives

If the Barbell Clean Grip Front Squat is too challenging, or if you are looking for variety, consider the following alternatives:

  • Goblet Squat: A good option for beginners or those working on their squat depth and form.
  • Dumbbell Front Squat: Provides a similar workout but with a slightly different weight distribution, making it easier to maintain balance.
  • Front Squat with straps: If you have difficulty with your grip or wrist mobility, straps can help keep the barbell in place.
