Execution

  1. 1
Find an elevated surface, such as a bench or sturdy platform, where you can place your rear foot.
  2. 2
Stand facing away from the elevated surface and place the top of your left foot on the elevated surface behind you.
  3. 3
Hold a barbell on your shoulders, just above your shoulder blades, gripping it with both hands.
  4. 4
Slowly lower through your right leg until your thigh is almost parallel to the floor. Make sure your knee does not move past your toes.
  5. 5
Drive yourself powerfully back to the starting position by pushing your right heel into the floor.
  6. 6
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination by performing a unilateral movement.
  • Increases strength and muscle mass in the legs and glutes.
  • Helps correct muscle imbalances between the legs.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning the torso too far forward, which can place pressure on the lower back.
  • ! Allowing the working leg's knee to move too far past the toes, which can lead to knee strain.
  • ! Not lowering deeply enough, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps and gluteus maximus, while also training the hamstrings, calves, and core for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • For beginners: Perform the exercise without weights to master the form and technique.
  • To increase the intensity: Add more weight to the barbell or use a heavier dumbbell in the goblet position.
  • As a variation: Try the split squat with the rear leg on a BOSU ball for an additional balance challenge.
