Barbell bench squats combine the strength of squats with the stability required when using a bench. This unique combination not only provides an intense lower-body workout but also improves your balance and coordination.

Execution

  1. 1
Begin by placing a barbell across your shoulders, just as you would for traditional squats.
  2. 2
Find a bench and position yourself so that when you squat down, your thighs are parallel to the floor.
  3. 3
Inhale and slowly bend your knees while pushing your hips back, as if you were going to sit down.
  4. 4
Make sure your back remains straight and your knees do not extend past your toes.
  5. 5
Lightly touch the bench with your buttocks, but do not sit down fully.
  6. 6
Forcefully push yourself back up to the starting position while exhaling.

Benefits

  • Improves the strength and size of the lower-body muscles.
  • Increases stability and balance, contributing to better performance in other exercises and daily activities.
  • Helps develop better posture by strengthening the core and back muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Descending or standing up too quickly: This can lead to loss of control and potential injuries. Focus on a controlled movement.
  • ! Leaning too far forward: This can place pressure on the lower back. Keep your back straight and your chest up.
  • ! Not descending far enough: Make sure your thighs reach parallel to the floor for maximum effectiveness.

Major Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. The core and the stabilizing muscles around the hips and lower back are also trained.

Possible Alternatives

  • If barbell bench squats are too challenging, first try traditional bodyweight squats to build strength.
  • For an extra challenge, add weight to the barbell or use one leg for a pistol squat on the bench.
  • Use a stability ball against the wall and your back for a variation that challenges stability even more.
