Execution

  1. 1
Begin standing with your feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. 2
Step forward with one leg while bending both knees to lower into a lunge position. Make sure your front knee does not move past your toes and your back knee nearly touches the ground.
  3. 3
Push yourself up through your front heel and return to the starting position.
  4. 4
Repeat the movement with the other leg, alternating legs for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Improves the strength and endurance of the lower-body muscles.
  • Increases core stability and balance.
  • Helps improve symmetry between the left and right sides of the body.
  • May contribute to better posture and reduced back pain by strengthening the core and lower-body muscles.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Stepping too far forward, causing the knees to move past the toes, which may place pressure on the knees.
  • ! Not lowering far enough into the lunge, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.
  • ! Leaning the body forward instead of remaining upright, which shifts the emphasis of the exercise away from the intended muscles.

主要 Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps (front of the thighs), hamstrings (back of the thighs), and glutes, and to a lesser extent the calves. Your core is also engaged for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • If you are new to lunges, begin without weights to learn proper form.
  • For an extra challenge, try combining the lunge with a biceps curl or an overhead press to also train the upper body.
  • Use a raised platform to perform reverse lunges for a different variation.
