Alternate-Leg Bodyweight Lunges with Pause

Lunges are a fantastic exercise for building strength and endurance in your lower body. By adding a pause with each leg switch, you increase the intensity and focus on the muscles being trained. This makes alternate-leg bodyweight lunges with a pause both effective and challenging.

Execution

  1. 1
Begin standing with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. 2
Step forward with one leg in a long stride.
  3. 3
Lower your hips until both knees are at approximately 90-degree angles.
  4. 4
Pause briefly in this position before pushing yourself back up to the starting position.
  5. 5
Switch legs and repeat the movement.
  6. 6
Keep your back straight and ensure your front knee does not move past your toes during the exercise.

Benefits

  • Improves balance and coordination by performing the exercise on one leg.
  • Increases lower-body muscle strength and endurance.
  • Helps improve hip flexibility.
  • Adding the pause increases the muscles’ time under tension, which leads to better muscle growth and strength development.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Leaning too far forward with your upper body, which can place stress on your lower back.
  • ! Allowing your front knee to travel too far past your toes, which can lead to knee problems.
  • ! Not lowering deeply enough, which reduces the effectiveness of the exercise.

Target Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and, to a lesser extent, the calves and core muscles for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • To increase the intensity, you can hold weights during the exercise.
  • For beginners, the stride length can be shortened or the pause omitted to make the exercise more accessible.
  • Use an elevated platform to place your rear foot on for Bulgarian split squats as a variation.
