Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your side with your legs stacked and your knees slightly bent.
  2. 2
Place your forearm on the floor for stability and your other hand behind your head.
  3. 3
Lift your top leg and top elbow toward each other as you exhale. Make sure to engage your obliques.
  4. 4
Slowly and under control, lower yourself back to the starting position as you inhale.
  5. 5
Repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions, then switch sides.

Benefits

  • Strengthens and tones the obliques.
  • Improves core stability and balance.
  • May help reduce back pain through a stronger core.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Performing the movements too quickly: use a controlled movement to achieve maximum muscle activation.
  • ! Not using the full range of motion: make sure your elbow and leg come as close together as possible to fully activate the obliques.

Key Muscles

The primary focus is on the obliques, but the deeper abdominal muscles and lower back also receive a good workout.

Possible Alternatives

  • Add a weight to the hand behind your head to increase the intensity.
  • Try the exercise on an exercise ball for an additional challenge and to engage more stabilizing muscles.
