Execution

  1. 1
Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  2. 2
Place your hands behind your head without pulling on your neck.
  3. 3
Lift your shoulders off the floor in a crunch and rotate your upper body so that your right elbow moves toward your left knee. Make sure your shoulder blades lift off the floor.
  4. 4
Return to the starting position and repeat the movement on the other side, moving your left elbow toward your right knee.
  5. 5
Repeat this alternating movement for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

  • Strengthens and defines the obliques.
  • Improves overall core stability and strength.
  • Helps reduce the risk of back pain through a stronger core.
  • Improves balance and posture.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Pulling on the neck: Make sure your hands support your head without pulling on your neck.
  • ! Moving too quickly: Perform the movement in a controlled manner to achieve maximum muscle activation.
  • ! Not rotating fully: Make sure you actually rotate and lift your shoulder blades off the floor for the best results.

Primary Muscles

The oblique crunch primarily trains the obliques, but the rectus abdominis (the "six-pack" muscles) and the deep core muscles are also engaged.

Possible Alternatives

  • Standing oblique crunch: For those who want to perform the exercise standing, providing a different form of stability training.
  • Oblique crunch on an exercise ball: For an extra challenge and deeper core activation due to the instability of the ball.
  • Plank with side crunch: An advanced variation that trains not only the obliques but also the entire core and many other muscle groups.
