Superman

The Superman exercise is a fantastic way to strengthen your core, lower back, glutes, and shoulder muscles without any equipment. It simulates Superman's position while flying, hence the name. This exercise not only helps build muscle strength but also improves your posture and may reduce back pain.

Execution

  1. 1
Lie face down on a mat, with your arms extended in front of you and your legs straight behind you.
  2. 2
Engage your core and simultaneously lift your arms, chest, and legs off the floor. Your body now forms a slight arch.
  3. 3
Hold this position for a few seconds, keeping your neck in a neutral position by looking at the floor.
  4. 4
Slowly lower yourself back to the starting position.
  5. 5
Repeat the exercise for the desired number of repetitions.

Benefits

The Superman exercise strengthens the muscles you need for good posture, which may lead to less back pain. Strengthening these muscles may also improve your performance in other exercises and daily activities.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Overarching your back, which can lead to strain. Make sure to engage your core to protect your back.
  • ! Extending your neck to look up, which can put pressure on your neck. Keep your neck in a neutral position by looking at the floor.

Target Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the erector spinae (the muscles along your spine), but it also trains the gluteus maximus (glute muscles), deltoids (shoulder muscles), and, to a lesser extent, the hamstrings and trapezius.

Possible Alternatives

If you want to adjust the intensity of the Superman exercise, you can try lifting only your arms or only your legs. For a greater challenge, you can add weights to your hands or ankles. Another variation is the 'Superman Banana' exercise, in which you rotate between the Superman position and lying on your back with your arms and legs off the floor.
