Execution

  1. 1
Begin by kneeling with your buttocks on your heels and your toes on the floor.
  2. 2
Extend your arms in front of you and place your palms flat on the floor.
  3. 3
Lean forward from your hips and try to bring your chest as close to the floor as possible without losing comfort.
  4. 4
Hold this position while breathing deeply in and out. Focus on stretching the muscles on the sides of your back.
  5. 5
Remain in this position for 20 to 30 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves flexibility in the back and shoulders.
  • Helps relieve tension and stiffness in the upper back.
  • May contribute to better posture by strengthening and stretching the back muscles.
  • Is a good warm-up or cool-down exercise for other workouts.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Dropping into the stretch too quickly: Take your time getting into position and focus on a gradual stretch.
  • ! Not breathing deeply enough: Deep breathing helps further open the back and shoulders.
  • ! Arching the back too much: Keep your back as straight as possible to stretch the correct muscles.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the latissimus dorsi (lats). The deltoids (shoulders) and trapezius (upper back) are also engaged, along with the arms and core to a lesser extent.

Possible Alternatives

  • To increase the intensity, try Child's Pose with an arm twist. This adds a rotation to the stretch, which further opens the shoulders and upper back.
  • For a gentler stretch, place your hands on an elevated surface such as a bench or chair.
