Execution

  1. 1
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and grip the barbell with an overhand grip, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  2. 2
Slightly bend your knees and hinge forward from your hips. Keep your back straight and nearly parallel to the floor.
  3. 3
Let the barbell hang with your arms extended and your palms facing you.
  4. 4
Pull the barbell up toward your lower ribs by driving your elbows back and squeezing your shoulder blades together.
  5. 5
Slowly and controllably lower the barbell back to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves the strength and size of the back muscles.
  • Helps improve posture by strengthening the muscles that keep your back straight.
  • Increases core stability and supports overall functional strength.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rounded back: Make sure your back stays straight throughout the exercise to prevent injuries.
  • ! Too much weight: Start with a lighter weight to ensure proper form before increasing the weight.
  • ! Elbows too far from the body: Keep your elbows close to your body to activate the correct muscles.

Key Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the latissimus dorsi, but it also trains the trapezius, posterior deltoids, biceps, and, to a lesser extent, the forearms and core.

Possible Alternatives

  • Dumbbell rows: For those without access to a barbell or who prefer unilateral training.
  • T-Bar rows: A variation that offers a different grip and angle, which can help target the back muscles in a different way.
  • Seated cable rows: For a more controlled movement that also effectively trains the back muscles.
