Standing Leg Elevated Hamstring Stretch
The Standing Leg Elevated Hamstring Stretch is an effective exercise for improving the flexibility and length of your hamstrings. This stretch helps reduce tension in your lower back and improves your overall mobility.
Benefits
- Improves hamstring flexibility.
- Helps prevent lower back pain.
- Improves posture and mobility.
Common Mistakes
- ! Rounded back: Bending with a rounded back reduces the effectiveness of the stretch and can lead to injuries. Make sure your back remains straight.
- ! Elevated surface too high: Start with a low elevated surface to avoid overstretching. Increase the height as you become more flexible.
Instructions
- Find an elevated surface, such as a bench or a step, where you can place your foot.
- Stand upright and place one foot on the elevated surface. Make sure your toes point forward.
- Keep your back straight and slowly bend forward from your hips. You will feel a stretch along the back of your extended leg.
- Hold this position for 15 to 30 seconds, then switch legs.
Main Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the hamstrings, the muscle group at the back of your thighs. Your calves and the muscles around your lower back are also lightly engaged.
Possible Alternatives
- For a less intense stretch, try the exercise without an elevated surface and bend your knee slightly.
- Alternatively, you can intensify the stretch by placing a yoga strap or towel around your foot and gently pulling on it.
