Standing Bow Hamstring Stretch
The Standing Bow Hamstring Stretch is an effective exercise for improving the flexibility and strength of your hamstrings. This stretch also helps reduce tension in the lower back and improves your overall balance.
Execution
-
1
Begin by standing on a flat surface with your feet hip-width apart.
-
2
Bend forward from your hips and try to touch your toes with your hands. Keep your knees slightly bent.
-
3
Grasp your right ankle with your right hand and try to bring your chest closer to your leg.
-
4
Hold this position for 15 to 30 seconds, then switch legs.
-
5
Repeat the stretch 2–3 times per leg.
Benefits
- Improves the flexibility of the hamstrings and calves.
- Helps reduce lower back pain.
- Improves posture and balance.
- May help prevent overuse injuries.
Common Mistakes
- ! Moving into the stretch too quickly – take time to slowly ease into the stretch.
- ! Bending the knees too much – try to keep them slightly bent, but not excessively.
- ! Not breathing during the stretch – make sure to breathe deeply in and out.
Targeted Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the hamstrings, but also stretches the calves, lower back, and, to a lesser extent, the shoulders and arms.
Possible Alternatives
- If the stretch is too intense, try a lighter variation by using a yoga block or a chair to support your hands.
- For a deeper stretch, try the Standing Bow Hamstring Stretch with a yoga band around your foot.
