Execution

  1. 1
Sit on the floor with your legs extended straight out in front of you.
  2. 2
Bend one leg and place that foot against the inside of your opposite thigh.
  3. 3
Inhale and lengthen your spine by reaching the crown of your head toward the ceiling.
  4. 4
As you exhale, hinge forward from your hips over your extended leg. Try to reach your toes, but focus on keeping your back straight.
  5. 5
Hold this position for 15–30 seconds, then switch legs.

Benefits

  • Improves hamstring flexibility, which may lead to better posture and less back pain.
  • Helps prevent injuries by increasing the range of motion in the legs and hips.
  • May improve performance in other exercises and sports activities by increasing range of motion.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Do not round your back in an attempt to reach farther forward. This reduces the effectiveness of the stretch and may lead to injuries.
  • ! Do not force the stretch by reaching too far. This may lead to overstretching and pain.

Primary Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the hamstrings, the muscle group at the back of your thighs. Your calves and lower back are also lightly stretched.

Possible Alternatives

  • If you have greater flexibility, try folding forward with both legs extended straight out in front of you to increase the intensity.
  • For a milder stretch, bend your knees slightly during the stretch.
