Seated Hamstring Stretch
The Seated Hamstring Stretch is a simple yet highly effective exercise to improve the flexibility and length of your hamstrings. This stretch helps reduce tension in your lower back and improves your overall mobility.
Benefits
- Improves the flexibility of the hamstrings and calves.
- Helps prevent lower back pain by reducing tension.
- Improves posture and mobility, contributing to better body mechanics during other exercises and daily activities.
Common Mistakes
- ! Rounded back: Make sure your back remains straight during the stretch to maximize effectiveness and prevent injuries.
- ! Stretching too quickly: Move slowly and gradually to give the muscles time to adapt and lengthen.
Instructions
- Sit on the floor with your legs extended straight in front of you.
- Take a deep breath in and keep your back straight.
- Bend forward from your hips while trying to reach your toes with your hands. If you cannot touch your toes, hold your ankles or shins instead.
- Hold this position while gently trying to deepen the stretch with each exhalation.
- Remain in this position for 15 to 30 seconds and repeat the stretch 2 to 3 times.
Primary Muscles
This exercise primarily targets the hamstrings, the muscle group at the back of your thighs. Your calves and lower back are also lightly stretched.
Possible Alternatives
- Standing Hamstring Stretch: Perfect if you have difficulty sitting or want a variation performed while standing.
- Lying Hamstring Stretch with a Towel: Ideal for a deeper stretch or for people with very tight hamstrings.
