Execution

  1. 1
Find a stable exercise ball and carefully sit on it with your legs extended in front of you.
  2. 2
Make sure your back is straight and your feet are positioned slightly wider than hip-width apart.
  3. 3
Inhale and extend your arms in front of you while slowly leaning forward from your hips, not your back.
  4. 4
Hold this position when you feel a good stretch in your hamstrings. Make sure you do not go too far; the stretch should feel comfortable.
  5. 5
Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds, then slowly return to the starting position.
  6. 6
Repeat the stretch 2–3 times, depending on your comfort level.

Benefits

  • Improved flexibility and range of motion in the hamstrings.
  • Relief from tension and stiffness in the lower back.
  • Improves balance and stability through the use of an exercise ball.
  • May help prevent injuries related to tight hamstrings.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Moving into the stretch too quickly: Take time to slowly ease into the stretch and listen to your body.
  • ! Rounding your back: Keep your back straight to stretch the correct muscles and prevent injuries.
  • ! Stretching too far: Do not force the stretch; you should feel a gentle stretch, not pain.

Main Muscles

This exercise primarily targets the hamstrings, the muscle group at the back of your thighs. Your calves and lower back are also lightly stretched and strengthened.

Possible Alternatives

  • If the exercise ball feels too unstable, try performing a similar stretch on the floor.
  • For a deeper stretch, try the exercise with one leg at a time while the other leg is bent.
  • Use a resistance band to hold your foot if you have difficulty reaching your toes.
