Sumo Deadlift

The Sumo Deadlift is a powerful variation of the classic deadlift, performed with a wider stance. This technique reduces the distance the barbell travels and places more emphasis on the inner thighs and hips.

Execution

  1. 1
Stand with your feet wider than shoulder-width apart, with your toes pointing outward.
  2. 2
Bend at your hips and knees and grip the barbell with an overhand or mixed grip, with your hands inside your knees.
  3. 3
Keep your back straight and chest up, and lift the barbell by extending your hips and knees simultaneously.
  4. 4
Once the barbell passes your knees, drive your hips forward and pull your shoulders back.
  5. 5
Lower the barbell in a controlled manner back to the starting position.

Benefits

  • Improves lower-body muscle strength.
  • Helps develop better posture and stability.
  • Less stress on the lower back compared with the conventional deadlift.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Rounded back: Make sure your back remains straight throughout the exercise to prevent injuries.
  • ! Leaning too far forward: Keep your chest up and ensure your shoulders do not move past your toes.
  • ! Bending your arms: Keep your arms straight and let the power come from your legs and hips.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscles trained with the Sumo Deadlift are the quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus, lower back, and adductors.

Possible Alternatives

  • Kettlebell Sumo Deadlift for a different grip and weight distribution.
  • Sumo Deadlift High Pull for extra emphasis on the shoulders and trapezius.
  • Deficit-free? Elevated Sumo Deadlift by placing the barbell on blocks for a shorter range of motion and more focus on the hips.
