Benefits

  • Strengthens and shapes the glutes.
  • Improves posture by strengthening the lower back and core.
  • May help reduce back pain by strengthening the lower back.
  • Hip flexibility may be improved.

Common Mistakes

  • ! Lifting the leg too high, causing the hips to rotate. Make sure your hips remain parallel to the floor.
  • ! Allowing the back to sag during the exercise. Keep your core engaged to maintain a straight back.
  • ! Performing the movement too quickly. Focus on a slow, controlled movement for maximum effectiveness.

Primary Muscles

The primary muscle groups engaged during the Straight Leg Kickback are the gluteus maximus (large glute muscle) and the hamstrings (back of your thighs). Secondarily, you also work your lower back and core for stability.

Possible Alternatives

  • Add a resistance band around your ankles for additional resistance.
  • Try performing the exercise standing, leaning against a wall or chair for stability.
  • For an additional challenge, hold your leg at the highest point for a few seconds before lowering it.
