Single-Leg Hip Thrust

  • Single-Leg Hip Thrust
  • Single-Leg Hip Thrust

Introduction: The Single-Leg Hip Thrust is an effective exercise for strengthening and isolating your glutes. This variation of the traditional hip thrust places greater emphasis on training each glute individually, promoting better balance and muscle development.

Execution: Begin by placing your upper back against a bench while sitting on the floor. Extend one leg and place the other foot flat on the floor, close to your glutes. Now drive your hips upward by contracting your glutes while keeping the extended leg in the air. Ensure that your hips are fully extended at the top, then slowly lower back down. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.

Primary Muscles: The primary muscle group trained with the Single-Leg Hip Thrust is the gluteus maximus (the gluteal muscles). You also work your hamstrings and core stability secondarily.

Benefits: This exercise helps improve symmetry between your left and right glute, which may contribute to better posture and a reduced risk of injury. It also increases the strength and explosiveness of your glutes.

Common Mistakes: A common mistake is not fully extending the hips at the top. Make sure your hips are fully extended for maximum glute activation. It is also important not to overload your back by creating too large an arch.

Possible Alternatives: If the single-leg variation is too challenging, start with the standard hip thrust with both feet on the floor. To increase the intensity, you can add weight by placing a barbell on your hips.
