Single-Leg Hip Thrust
The Single-Leg Hip Thrust is a powerful exercise focused on strengthening your glutes and hamstrings. This exercise provides a unique challenge because it requires balance and stability, leading to improved muscle coordination and lower-body strength.
Execution
-
1
Find a stable bench or elevated surface and sit on the floor in front of it.
-
2
Lean your upper back against the edge of the bench and place your feet flat on the floor.
-
3
Lift one leg and extend it. Keep your other foot firmly on the floor.
-
4
Drive through the foot on the floor, contract your glutes, and lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees.
-
5
Slowly lower your hips and repeat the movement for the desired number of repetitions. Then switch legs.
Benefits
- Effectively strengthens the glutes and hamstrings.
- Improves balance and stability through the unilateral nature of the exercise.
- Enhances muscle coordination between the lower-body muscles.
- May help reduce imbalances between the left and right sides of the body.
Common Mistakes
- ! Not fully extending the hips at the top of the movement.
- ! Putting too much pressure on the lower back instead of the glutes.
- ! Lifting the foot that is on the floor, which leads to reduced stability.
Primary Muscles
The primary focus is the gluteus maximus, the largest of the gluteal muscles. The hamstrings and core muscles are also engaged for stability and support during the exercise.
Possible Alternatives
- For beginners: Start with the standard Hip Thrust to master the technique.
- To increase the intensity: Add weight to your hips, such as a barbell or weight plate.
- For variation: Try the Banded Hip Thrust by placing a resistance band around your knees for additional resistance.
